In April we spoke to members of the PRISM Employee Resource Group at Bath and Body Works for Lesbian Visibility Day. They kindly asked us back to celebrate Pride Month with a closing party. It was such a great experience and we would like to do it again! Reach out if your organization or business would like to host a conversation about LGBTQ+ history, culture and community.
Folks, we won a big award on May 8th. We learned we were awarded $41, 285 to conduct a research project with 50 lesbians over 40 who have patronized lesbian bars. Our project, Aging Well, Aging Together, will explore the impact of lost lesbian spaces on aging and social isolation. We know how important these spaces have been to building and sustaining community. This project will enable us to add to the research on our population. We are one of only two projects to receive funding in a field of 46 submissions. Dr. Joanne Patterson of the College of Public Health at Ohio State will join us as Principal Investigator on the project. Go Team!!!
Our little crew, Julie, LuSter and Project Manager Megan will be traveling to New Jersey, New York City and Pittsburgh soon. This trip will close out interviews for the time being. While out and about we will talk to the legendary Shushie (long time bartender), Brenda (one of the 5 lesbians arrested at Columbus Pride for going topless) and Viva Valezz (legendary burlesque performer).
If you have our hats and t-shirts and want to be featured on our social media pages, please send us a picture or short video. We love our fans!
As a result of work on the film, LuSter and Julia have both joined the United We Stand Speakers Bureau at Ohio Humanities. Check out the webpage and consider inviting us to speak!
